Meet Kevin Deese

Diagnosed with HIV in 2014, Kevin Deese believes it is his duty as a relatively privileged member of this underrepresented, stigmatized, marginalized, and maligned group to stand up, be counted, and advocate for others. His HIV status had a profound impact on the trajectory of his life.

Kevin discovered his status shortly before graduating from the United States Naval Academy. This diagnosis disqualified him from commissioning as a naval officer, a rule which he continues to fight to this day through litigation. Outside of the courtroom, he continues the fight in other ways, including working last summer with JustUs Health on initiatives aimed at closing the employment gap among people living with HIV. He currently works part-time with JustUs Health with the Positive Link peer support program for gay and bi men living with HIV.

In addition to his volunteer and advocacy work, Kevin is also pursuing an MBA and MPP at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management and Humphrey School of Public Affairs. On the board, he plans to use his unique perspective to steer decisions, and his growing connections within the LGBTQ+ and business communities to enrich and enliven the network of people who know and support Clare Housing’s mission.
