Reflections of a Volunteer —

I am grateful for the many volunteer opportunities presented to me since 1996 when I started my volunteer work with Clare House in St. Paul. My volunteer activities started by assisting in various fundraising activities around the metro area and then turned into a board of directors opportunity in the late 1990s. My first stint on the board instilled in me the importance of the work being done in our community then and now.

As Clare Housing grew, a dear friend and fellow volunteer, David Vieths and I began hosting annual Friends Dining With Friends “chili fests” every February. We hosted nine annual events and have many wonderful memories of sharing wine, chili and dessert with friends and supporters of Clare Housing…typically on the coldest night of the winter!

Several years ago, David and I also started working to rehabilitate the once-beautiful and thriving flower beds at Damiano House. From April through October, we spend time trimming, weeding, transplanting flowers, and maintaining the pond in the backyard. Along the way, we were privileged to meet and get to know many care givers and residents at Damiano.

In 2009 I re-joined the Board of Directors and have served on the Governance Committee, Strategic Planning Committee and the Fundraising Committee. In 2012, I have had the opportunity to serve as Board Chair working with an incredibly dedicated and talented group of individuals all working together to support the mission of Clare Housing: to provide affordable housing, supportive services and compassionate care for those living with  HIV/AIDS.

I have benefited both personally and professionally from my interactions with staff, volunteers, and those we serve…the residents of the foster care homes and the apartments. I encourage all who read this reflection to continue your support of Clare Housing in any way you are able; the organization provides invaluable services to those of our neighbors who most need our support.

Michael resigned from the board of directors in June 2012 and relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. Thank you Michael for your leadership and commitment to Clare Housing – we will miss working with you!
