Meet Brian Harrison

Clare Housing welcomes Brian Harrison as one of three new Board Members in 2022!

Brian Harrison (he/him), is a professor of political science currently at Carleton College, previously with the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, with a research focus that includes political communication, LGBTQ politics, and public opinion.

Brian, can you tell us what interested you in serving on the Board of Directors (BOD) for Clare Housing?

Public policy can be really complicated and sometimes that complexity means things don’t get done. If a plan isn’t 100% perfect or doesn’t address absolutely everything that needs addressing, some folks throw up their hands and choose inaction. I am thoroughly impressed with Clare Housing doing just the opposite: tackling multi-pronged issues head-on, not being intimidated by the need to walk a complicated path to better health and life outcomes for people living with HIV/AIDS. From my interactions with the staff and a few board members, it’s a well-run, thoughtful organization that I’m very proud to be a small part of.

What skill or value are you most excited to bring to your service on the board?

I have the ability to explain or to break down complicated ideas in ways that make sense. I also enjoy political advocacy and hope to bring that value to the board. I like meeting new people and look forward to finding ways to work with other Minnesota organizations with different goals and aims in ways that are complementary (and not competitive) to Clare’s mission.

What does “success” mean to you in terms of your work as a board member?

Success to me means being a meaningful member of the team that focuses on good governance, transparency, and the best interests of the community Clare Housing serves at all times.

What do you hope to accomplish in your current term with Clare Housing?

I would like to augment the advocacy work done by Clare Housing. I like to bring disparate people and groups together in common political cause and I look forward to connecting with people who work to make the world better in the way their organization prioritizes to help all of that important work thrive. We all do better when we all do better.

We look forward to working with you, Brian! Thank you for your service on the Clare Housing Board of Directors!
